Can a learner driver carry passengers while driving?
Yes, learner drivers can legally carry passengers. In fact learner drivers must carry one qualified supervising passenger, who must supervise them while they are practicing their driving. However, we would strongly recommend that learner drivers do not take any more passengers than the person who is supervising them.
Under no circumstances should the car be driven with more than the legal maximum capacity of the car is not exceeded.
Research has been conducted by the road safety charity Brake which shows that peer pressure can lead to young drivers "showing off to their passengers and taking more risks". This is the reason why we suggest that learner drivers should not carry more than the person who is supervising them. Learning to drive safely is our main objective for learner drivers along with giving them the skills to continue to drive safely in the future.
There is more information about safe driving for young people on the Brake website. You can see this using this link https://www.brake.org.uk/get-involved/take-action/mybrake/knowledge-centre/young-drivers
